THE LEGACY

Every year at least 100 learners (Class 3 & 4) selected from between 5-10 primary schools will benefit from an intensive and high-quality vacation program. This is designed to make them fully proficient readers by the end of the long vacation. They will also receive support with follow-up reading materials to maintain and improve on their status as proficient readers.

THE PROCESS

  • Schools will be invited to nominate learners in Class 3 & 4 to benefit from this scheme.
  • At least 100 learners (total) will be selected based on school details, gender, needs, etc.
  • Permission will be obtained from parents, school authorities, and MBSSE for the exercise.
  • The best and most spacious school facilities available will be rented for this exercise.
  • Adequate measures will be taken for the safety, security, and well-being of the learners.
  • Daily transportation, recreation, and meals will be provided as part of this exercise.
  • Well-vetted teachers will be recruited and specially trained to implement the scheme.
  • Other staff will also be recruited for the care, security, and well-being of learners.
  • All expenses for the scheme will be paid by the 4 children of the late Mrs. Fanny Wright.

THE OUTCOMES

  • Annual guarantee of at least 100 fully proficient readers in the primary school system.
  • Follow-up reading materials widely available to support continued reading proficiency.
  • Cadres of primary teachers highly trained to facilitate reading proficiency in learners.
  • Potential for other benefactors or “In-Memoriam Families” to replicate the scheme.
  • “Success breeds Success” – NGOs, Communities, and Diaspora may copy the scheme.
  • A reading culture will be slowly but surely restored and revitalized in Sierra Leone.
  • Over time, No Child in Sierra Leone Will Ever Leave Class 4 Without Learning to Read!
